JPL Season 5 Recap: 1221 Takes the Crown
A look back at Janken Pro League Season 5: 1221 won JPL1, best newcomer, longest in JPL1, narrow escapes, streaks, and how the win rate compared to previous seasons.
The Season That Was
JPL Season 5 is in the books. At the top, a new champion was crowned; below, six promoted from JPL2 into JPL1 and six relegated from JPL1 into JPL2.
Last Winner: What Happened?
1221 took the JPL1 title with 20 wins, 8 losses, and an impressive 62.2% round win rate. In their first season in the top flight after winning promotion from JPL2 in Season 4, they led from the front and never gave up the crown.
1221 was promoted from JPL2 in Season 4, where they only managed to finish 6th with 18–8 (59.6% round win). In Season 5 they stepped into JPL1 and won it. First season in the top flight, first title. A meteoric rise.
Longest in JPL1
Neon Nova has now spent 5 seasons in the top flight—the longest tenure in JPL1. Consistency at the highest level: they've seen champions come and go and have remained in the mix. After winning the top tier in Season 3, they have been mid-table in Seasons 4 and 5, placing 10th and 11th respectively.
Narrowly Avoided Demotion
Just above the drop zone, Vapor Sage and Sable clung on. Both finished 13–15; Vapor Sage 13th and Sable 14th, one and two places clear of the six who went down. In a league where every match counts, that gap is the difference between staying up and going down.
Best and Worst Streaks
Iron Lynx put together the longest winning streak of the season: 11 games in a row. They rode that form to 19–9 and promotion back into JPL1. On the other side, ali endured the longest losing streak with 9 consecutive losses. Streaks define a season as much as the final table—one run can lift you into the promotion places, another can drag you toward the drop.
Win Rate vs Previous Seasons
1221’s round win rate this season was 62.2%, up from 59.6% in their only previous JPL season (JPL2). Stepping up a tier and improving their round win rate is a sign of a player who arrived ready for the top flight.
Promoted and Relegated
Six went up from JPL2: ranger (21–7, 62.6%), Lurch boy, I'm Just a Number, Grammar Police, Iron Lynx, and Vandellas—with Iron Lynx and Vandellas returning to JPL1. Six went down from JPL1: Kismet, Game Theory, Eclipse, indy918, Vortex, and Passive Aggressive. ranger won JPL2; Mehdi_salehi won JPL3 with a whopping 24 wins, 10 losses, and 60.6% round win.
Looking Ahead
Season 5 is closed. JPL1 has its champion in 1221; the pyramid has shifted. Season 6 will reset the maths again—same format, two games a day, no hiding. That's the league. And that's why we'll be back for the next one.
